Black Pearl Metallic, color code 199, first became available in the U.S. for the 1985 model year. This color is often confused with Anthracite Grey Metallic (172G). In bright sun, Black Pearl Metallic looks a lot like Anthracite Grey Metallic, but in the shade or at night, Black Pearl appears almost black. The colors were offered concurrently from the mid 80s into the 1990s. When the paint chips for these two colors are compared in period literature the colors look quite different, but in person, especially in bright light, they are very similar. We’ve tried to offer photos of Black Pearl Metallic below in various lighting situations to help you see how different it can appear depending upon the light. I’ve seen at least six 560 SLs in this color, so anecdotally, I’d say it was a fairly popular color for the 560 SL.

[…] Black Pearl Metallic w/ grey leather […]
I recently purchased a 1985 300CDT with paint code 199 or Black Pearl. I was not sure what color it was until I looked at the code and then checked it out. It does need a good polish so I am checking around for the best method and products to use on it. If anyone had any advise please forward it to me. The car only has 95,000 kilometers on it and is in really good original condition. I will post a couple of picks here once the weather warms up and I can get it out of the garage.
