Good question Keith… I happen to be working with a car right now that is Grey Beige Poly (728 H). I would say 728 has more gold in it. Anthracite (172G) is very much a dark metallic grey, what one might call ‘gun metal grey’. While 728 is more of a ‘pewter’ color… actually, similar to the photos of the Desert Taupe Metallic 560SL I have pictured in the color library. I will email you a couple of photos of 728 so you can see for yourself, I just haven’t added that color to the library yet, in fact, this is the first 280SL I have ever seen that color.
Hi, this car is listed as anthracite grey metallic, but some of the comments section is claiming this is not the original color. Seller is under if it is original or not. Was the 1987 560SL available in anthracite grey metal I? Is it possible this is original color? The hard top is black, is it possible it would have come in 2-tone originally? Many thanks

Hi Harris, Just checked the comments on MM and saw your question about the color of this car. It looked like ‘Black Pearl Metallic’ when I saw the first photo, and upon looking through the photos of the car I see the seller included a photo of the data tag under the hood which includes the color code. As I suspected, it is, indeed, color code 199 – Black Pearl Metallic… NOT Anthracite as the description states.
You’ll notice that on the data tag the SAME color code appears twice, “199 G” (G for ‘Glasurit’ the OEM paint manufacturer). That means that the body of the car and the hard top were the same color, Black Pearl, from the factory. So, the black hard top (probably 040 – black) is NOT correct for this car. If it was, you’d have two different paint codes on the data tag, one for the body color, one for the top color, like you see on Pagoda SLs regularly and R107 cars from the 70s. Two tone (different colored hard top and body) SLs were VERY rare in the 1980s. You could order cars with different hard top and body colors in the 560 SL, but I have seen very few of them, maybe two, ever.
I’d chalk this one up to a careless (or clueless) seller and shame on Hemmings for not checking the color code for accuracy in their description.

I’m looking to buy a medium grey (over red interior) 280 SL. What is the difference between 172 G and 728 H?
