(Update – December 2019 – Sold!) Every once in a while a very special car becomes available… the kind of car that challenges the market, that even challenges taste and personal preference… do you love it? Do you hate it? Either way… you’d probably like to have it. This is one of those cars. This is a Pre-Merger AMG Mercedes modified W109 chassis 300 SEL 6.3.
Modified by AMG Affalterbach in the early 1980s for a wealthy German client to participate in European road Rallies, this car got the AMG treatment, inside, outside and under the hood. Rare for a classic Mercedes, with AMG work orders (that we have had translated by a friend in Germany – to the best of his ability) to help explain exactly what this beast is.
Over 400 detailed photos available here. Videos posted below.

Full tool kit
European spec car, modified by AMG Affalterbach 1981 – 1982. This car is fast and rumbles like a true German muscle car, see videos.
Current owner is in his 80s, emigrated from Germany to the U.S. in the 1960s after being trained as a Mercedes-Benz technician. He worked at World Wide Motors in Indianapolis for many years as a tech and is a Master Mercedes Technician. He has owned the car for 35+ years.
He purchased the car in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1984 from the “German Playboy” (as he describes him) who commissioned AMG to carry out extensive performance and cosmetic modifications from stock in 1981 – 1982. According to the owner, the ‘playboy’ sold the 6.3 because he wanted to buy a Ferrari.
AMG receipts have been translated, each receipt has been scanned, the English translation appears on each page (they are the LAST photos in the Flickr album).
Modifications include (but are not limited to – please see translation of AMG receipts):
Complete repaint / color change (original color, as per data tag, was Blue Poly (387 H)
All chrome removed and painted black (U.S. spec headlights added after import remain chrome)
Engine removed, completely disassembled, overhauled, performance improved
Chassis Lowered, negative camber set
Front spoiler fabricated, fitted, installed
Air vents cut in front fenders
Interior replaced with blue velour
Recaro seats installed
Rear spoiler added
AMG Penta wheels were also installed (however they do not appear on the work order)
Many other service / maintenance items and other modifications
Some rust repair is also noted to the underside of the car
The current owner knew Werner Aufrecht, one of the AMG founders, in the 80s and spoke to him about this car on several occasions. Werner estimated the engine in this car produces between 340 and 350 HP however, he didn’t know the exact engine displacement after their modifications.
After he bought the car in Germany, the owner had it shipped to the U.S., to his home in Indianapolis. DOT inspectors required the owner to remove the Euro spec head lights and install U.S. units (this is why the headlight bezels are chrome), front and rear side markers were also added. U.S. DOT didn’t require any other changes.
A U.S. spec speedometer / odometer cluster was installed upon imports. According to the owner, the odometer showed approximately 28,000 KMs upon importation. The current odometer read approximately 5,000 miles when it was installed in 1984. The owner says that he has driven the car about 20,000 miles during his ownership. The odometer reads approximately 25,505 miles.
Current condition / maintenance items:
Repaint from the 80s is presentable and holding up well. There are some nicks, dings and scratches.. it’s much more ‘weapons grade’ that trailer queen.Windows, locks, sunroof, etc. are all in good working condition.
Current owner installed the A/C system that is in the car. He removed it from a 280 SL, it is charged, fully functional and blows cold air.
Air suspension system was completely rebuilt over the past several years.
Both front air valves were rebuilt and new air bags installed. The rear air valve was rebuilt and new, rear air bags were installed. Goodyear Eagle tires are in good condition, date coded 2013.
Some rust at jack points visible, see detailed photos of underside in the flickr album. Both mufflers show some rust. Tachometer is currently not working nor is the interior dome light.
Please see the 400+ detailed photos of the car in this Flickr album, also see the videos of the car driving.
To hear about the history of this car from its Master Mercedes technician owner, with his thick German accent, is better than any photos. A conference call for interested parties can be arranged.
