1978 Mercedes Prices
Here is the original Mercedes price list for all models offered in the United States for model year 1978. There were four sets of price cards for 1978, as there were three price increases for 1978 model year cars. *Models and technical information is on one side of each card, prices and options are on the other (two scans per card, per year).
Ahhhhh, 1978… John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John starred in the movie “Grease,” Hasbro released ‘Hungry, Hungry Hippos and Atari unveiled ‘Space Invaders’ to the world starting the video game craze.
Mercedes introduced the C123 to the North American market for the 1978 model year, the Coupe version of its successful W123 chassis sedan. The W123 would continue to sell in great numbers through the mid 80s. The mighty W116 6.9 sedan cost nearly $17,000 more than a 450 SL, huge money in the late 70s.

Pricing for 1978 models was printed and distributed to dealers in October of 1977, this silver card was the first for the ’78 model year.
Over the course of the year, the 300 D sedan saw a price increase of a little over $1,300 over the course of the year while the 450 SL saw an increase of almost $2000. Other models saw a similar percentage increase.

This is the second card for the 1978 model year. Printed and distributed to dealers in February of 1978, the first price increases of the year.

Interestingly, the diesel powered W123 coupes were only offered by Mercedes to the North American Market.

The third price increase for 1978 came in May with this yellow card.

This is the fourth and final price card for the 1978 model year, these prices were in place by July and last until the 1979 models were released later in October.
