Mercedes Prices in 1977
Here is the original Mercedes price list for all models offered in the United States for model year 1977. There were three sets of price cards for 1977, as there were three price increases for 1977 model year cars.
ABBA’s hit ‘Dancing Queen’ was on the Billboard charts and the Eagles released ‘Hotel California’… and Mercedes… added another model to their line up, the 450 SEL 6.9 midway through the year.
The design of the price cards was changed for 1977 as well, the colors seem to reflect the time too. Initial pricing for 1977 was released in December 1976. The model line up, at this point, is unchanged from 1976.
Prices for each model increased by about 10% for most models from 1976 to 1977
First Price Increase – March 1977
Second Price Increase – July 1977
The mighty 6.9 became available during the 1977 model year, it appears on this final price card for 1977. Notice, the 6.9 was almost $15,000 more than a regular 450 SEL sedan… serious money for any car in the late 70s. According to the hand written note on this card, inland freight from the East coast port to Minneapolis (where we got these cards) was and additional $300. While there are three different price cards for 1977, meaning an original and two increases, the increases over the entire year were only about 5% per model. The increase from 1977 models to the 1978 model year cars was greater.
